Remove unnecessary traffic lights, or replace with phased, part-time LED/solar-powered lights with left-filters
Traffic lights use 50-150W bulbs and are on 24hrs a day. An 8-light set will therefore typically use 19 kilowatt-hours daily, and there are tens of these. There is normally a huge tailback at the junction near me, but whenever there is no queue, I know it’s because the lights are out of action!
The St Albans Road appears to be a long trail of unsychronised 4-way lights. If they each turn red as I reach them, as happens quite frequently in the early hours of the morning, when there is no other traffic anyway, this can almost double the length of my journey across Watford.
Particularly frustrating are the lights at the N Orbital/St Albans Rd junction from which the left filter has been removed. That means that taking account of the pedestrian crossing, the traffic turning left to Garston in particular is unnecessarily stationary for 80% of the time. Standing cars waste fuel and emit unnecessary pollution.
