For many years now we have seen strings of appeals on behalf of the Third World, but nothing ever really seems to change permanently. People and their children continue to starve and to die of water-borne diseases, often through inadequate medical care. The money raised, even from major campaigns, seems to be a drop in the ocean. It seems that the problem is too big to solve. There is hope, however, if only humanity will adopt the solution.
The cost of feeding the Third World is around £25 billion a year (calculated from UN statistics 2000). This sounds like a lot, but the population of the developed nations is approximately 2 billion. So the cost of ending starvation is around £1 a month from each person in the developed nations.
People who are prepared to do their bit are asked to make out a monthly standing order for £1 into a fund used to sponsor low-tech, environmentally friendly, development projects undertaken by existing charitable agencies in partnership with those who are to benefit. (Any funds required for administration are to be raised separately through business enterprises.) People are also asked to pass this message on to their family and friends. This is the first time that action has been attempted on a scale designed to resolve world poverty in its totality.
